Code of conduct

Everyone should feel safe and welcome at our socials and festivals. So that everyone can have a good time on our dance floors, please respect the following.

Dance floor etiquette

12 things we ask of everyone

At the weekly Swing Social, at our festivals and at every event we organise.

  1. Ask everyone to dance

Especially new dancers and visitors – this is how we help make everyone feel welcome.

  2. Don't assume dance roles

Just ask: “Would you like to lead or follow?”

  3. Say yes

There is nothing better than an enthusiastic yes – and give every dance your best.

  4. Say no (thank you)

This is your right, and it requires no explanation or apology. If someone declines a dance, that's okay! Don't take it personally – just say “Sure, maybe next time!”

  5. Say STOP

If anyone touches you inappropriately or makes you uncomfortable in any way, that is not okay. Tell them to stop, and tell someone from the team if they don't.

  6. No aerials on the social floor

The social floor is often very crowded: no airsteps, dips, lifts or drops. Keep these for jam circles and competitions – and only with your partner's verbal consent.

  7. Bring a spare shirt

Dancing is sweaty – bring extra shirts to change into.

  8. Photos and videos

If you do not wish to be photographed or filmed, please let the team know when you arrive.

  9. No flash

Please do not use flash photography.

  10. Mind the other dancers

Be careful and respectful of other dancers on the floor. If you accidentally bump into, step on or kick someone, immediately check that they are okay and apologise.

  11. Respect boundaries

Be aware of non-verbal signals and respect your partner's personal boundaries. Seek consent within the dance – not everyone feels comfortable in a closed embrace, for example.

  12. No unsolicited advice

Leave teaching off the social floor entirely. If someone wants your input, they will ask for it.

Something happened? Talk to us.

If you experience or witness behaviour that makes you or someone else feel unsafe, please tell someone from the organising team or festival staff straight away – at the event, or afterwards by email to blackforesthop@gmail.com.

These rules date from 2018. The board may want to review them, and name specific contact persons (e.g. an awareness team) for the weekly social and for festivals – to be confirmed.
